Chris's Toyota MR2 Engine Rebuild

This is the engine rebuilding portion of the car website. This is really the first time this MR2 has been worked on (since the bodywork phase). As you can see, the 4AGE is being rebuilt! It is a very exciting time in an MR2's life, when its engine is massaged back to like-new specifications. enjoy the pictures!

engine back from the machine shop!

Shiny new pistons, in shiny new bores, with shiny new hones.

ooo la la, new freeze plugs!

Bottom end appears to be in good order eh?

The machine shop painted over the oil filter area, so it got treated with our favorite friend... Paint thinner (mineral spirits). We like to use Dishwashing gloves when working on cars. Someday we will put fast orange out of business!

Much better...

The headgasket in place and waiting for the head.

Chris giving birth to a head... WOW that just sounds wrong.

here is the engine with the head torqued down. BEHOLD THE MIGHTY 4AGE!!!

Too much photo editing fun.

Here is the engine with the valve covers and front (plastic) covers on.

clutch installed and ready for the tranny.

Believe it or not, this engine was totally caked in a very thick dirt and oil combination.

Just in case there is any confusion as to what kind of engine this is.

The day of installation... Here is the engine on the dolly right before we wheeled it over to the car. Looks purty doesn't it?

Engine is ready to be put into the car... or is the car ready to be put onto the engine?

A slightly better shot.

About 4 hours later, here is the engine up in the car. Sorry about the big stick in your face, there wasn't much I could do at the time.

This is how it sits! all mounts hooked up. Let me give a run-down of how the engine was installed.

  1. Lift the ass end of the car WAY up in the air with an engine hoist.
  2. Roll the engine into position on a furniture dolly.
  3. Lower the car over the engine (expect 30 min or more for this step!)
  4. Hook up the mounts in this order:
    • Passenger side mount
    • Driver side mount
    • Rear mount
    • Front mount

I made a panoramic picture out of three smaller pictures. This is before we started putting the engine in.
